The Black Godfather, a new Netflix documentary, tells the incredible story of Clarence Avant, a music executive who has had a significant impact on Hollywood and culture as a whole. Through interviews with stars like Barack Obama and Snoop Dogg, the film brings to light Avant’s business savvy and influence, which have been instrumental in the careers of athletes, musicians, executives, and politicians.

Born in South Carolina and raised in a segregated south, Avant later moved to New Jersey where he quickly made a name for himself despite only finishing the ninth grade. Executive producer and director Reginald Hudlin notes that the impact Avant has had is beyond numbers, and that the documentary was made to celebrate a man whose contributions have gone unnoticed for too long.

The film’s broad appeal, which tells a specific story of black culture, shows the nuance and details of black life and culture, and how figures like Avant are important in American history.

SPOTLIGHT

From New York Subway Busking to 20 Weeks in UK Charts

Damon C. Scott, a New York City subway busker, gained fame in the UK after singing the chorus on Storm Queen’s “Look Right Through,” which spent 20 weeks on the UK charts in 2013. However, as revealed in Emily Sheskin’s documentary, “Damon at 86th Street,” Scott did not make as much money from the hit song as one might think.

In the film, Scott admits that he is “very unsuccessful” as an entertainer in the United States. He first met Storm Queen’s Morgan Geist through a human rights lawyer who invited him to perform as a for-hire vocalist. While Scott was paid “x-amount of dollars” for his work on “Look Right Through,” he did not benefit from the song’s success in the same way as Geist. Scott toured around the UK after the song’s release, but he was largely unknown until he started singing the chorus.

Despite his lack of commercial success, Scott has continued to pursue his music career, certifying Great Scott Records, LLC, and adding new tracks to his Soundcloud. He hopes to reach the same level of success as Storm Queen someday.

Sheskin’s documentary provides a glimpse into the challenges faced by aspiring musicians, particularly those who perform in public spaces like the subway. It highlights the importance of perseverance, even in the face of disappointment and setbacks. Damon C. Scott’s story is a reminder that success is not always measured in financial terms and that passion and dedication can be their own rewards.

The Bridge: 50 Years of Hip Hop Podcast With Nas & Miss Info

To commemorate hip-hop’s 50 year milestone, Spotify has partnered with Mass Appeal’s #HipHop50 program. The podcast enables listeners to learn about hip-hop’s rich history and its impact on society, culture, and the music industry and the icons it has created.

The podcast delves deep into the history of hip-hop, tracing its evolution from microphones, turntables, and sound systems to a global cultural phenomenon and big business. The podcast is hosted by Nas, a renowned rapper and hip-hop icon, and veteran journalist Minya “Miss Info” Oh, and features interviews with several hip-hop legends such as Ice Cube, Cordae, Mary J. Blige, Jeezy, and Yara Shahidi.

Nas shares that the podcast has exposed him to many untold stories that connect to other stories, allowing him to see hip-hop as a piece of history. He cites MC Lyte’s story as a female artist who woke up and went into a male-dominated industry because she felt it was her calling, and Ice Cube and N.W.A.’s story when they first came to New York City and were booed, then sold out the Apollo Theater. Nas also mentions that the podcast has made him more enthusiastic about being an artist in the art form since he can see that there is so much more for him to do, having been inspired by the people he has talked to.

Kano is notably one UK’s top British Rappers from the 2000 era but more recently he is known for his role as an actor in the popular drama series ‘Top Boy‘. This song ‘Hustler’ demonstrates the creativity and constructive message behind his music, showing how the street youths in disadvantaged areas are selling music instead of drugs and he demonstrates this in the video by recreating scenes from the film ‘American Gangster‘ replacing the drugs with CDs.
